Knowing other Cultures is Important
 
 
Culture is large piece of the people life and environment in the world. Each country has its own. The characteristic of a particular group of people will be shown by the culture itself.  Culture seems like the way people communicate with others.  There is an old saying that states, “In order to make friends with other people around the world, you have to know their cultures first.” It has proved to be very important that by knowing others cultures while living in the culturally diverse society nowadays. Hence, there are three reasons why students should learn about culture.
First, it will help students to minimize misunderstanding when they are interacting with others which have different culture with them. When you should study abroad and your environment is changing but you don’t know well how the people life such as what is the food in that area, how wearing appropriate clothes, how is the people taste, how the way they are thinking and so many others. You will feel strange in that area and can’t communicate as the local people want. By learning culture before, you will not find difficulties and culture shock to life there. For example, when Hana (Belgian) comes to Indonesia to study, it’s usual for her to see the eyes of people who talking with her. However, in Indonesia it’s unusual; it seems that she doesn’t respect the people, especially if she is talking with the older one. The Indonesian will think that she is not respectful.
Second, students can adapt with local people easier. Students will find it easier to communicate and get along very well with other people surrounding them, those make both of them (students and local people) comfort, at least make it easy for them to adapt themselves at the beginning. For instance, two students who learn in Indonesia, Ikhsan from Indonesia having a conversation with Diana from England, Diana thinks that Ikhsan told very boring story. So, Diana says it directly to Ikhsan, straight forward to Ikhsan. However for Ikhsan, he will not say like that, he hides it and he is more comfort to say to her, the story of her is interesting even though the real is bored. Nevertheless it’s okay if both of them know about each culture they can adapt and understood about it.
Third, it would be very useful and beneficial for students in the future when they have to work and cooperate with people in different countries around the world. Globalization has bought people and business cross around the world. It has caused them a numbers of problems regarding some simple things like communicating with foreigners, or more complex things like making contracts, dealing, and persuading with them. Hence, by communicating and understanding their customers or business partner cultures, they can enlarge their businesses and spread their products over many other potential markets in the world steadily and expeditiously. In case, Farah is the owner of travel tour in Yogyakarta especially for tourism (foreign people), she should have employees who can speak English and know about the foreign culture because the work district always related with dealing the foreign people which have different culture with Indonesian. The benefits she can acquire would be very great and indisputable if the environment of her job can be handled well by her employees with the foreigners, not only in materials and money, but also in things like prestige and reputation.
            Completely, learning about culture make students more knowledge other cultures and societies. Students will acquire the greater successful, comfortable lives such as they can adjust to the environment and greater careers they will possess.
